We follow the Belgian author&#8217;s line and his career, the building of a West in which women hold a place of strength and resolve that is rarely acknowledged, and the cultural collisions the series depicts with a clear-sightedness that reaches beyond comedy. We then trace the legacy through to Achd\u00e9, who took on the challenge of keeping an eighty-year-old body of work alive, and close with a set of tributes by Matthieu Bonhomme, Blutch, Mawil and Ralf K\u00f6nig, alongside the Portuguese contribution of Andr\u00e9 F. Morgado and Joana Afonso to the European anthology dedicated to the cowboy. A journey that celebrates Lucky Luke through the eyes of the man who created him and of those who go on reinventing him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Morris<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maurice De Bevere, known as Morris, was born in Kortrijk on 1 December 1923 and would become one of the founding figures of European comics. He trained in law but turned towards drawing while studying animation with Jean Image, later crossing paths with the likes of Franquin, Peyo and Jij\u00e9. In 1946 he created Lucky Luke, the lone cowboy we all know, together with his faithful Jolly Jumper and the dog Rantanplan; the first adventure appeared in the <em>Almanach Spirou<\/em> for 1947. Between 1948 and 1955 he travelled across the United States, and it was there that he met Ren\u00e9 Goscinny \u2014 a partnership that would define decades of the series&#8217; success, until the writer&#8217;s death in 1977. Morris received numerous distinctions over the course of his career, among them the Grand Prix at Angoul\u00eame in 1992 and the title of Officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1998. He died in Brussels on 16 July 2001, aged 77.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Achd\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Herv\u00e9 Darmenton, known as Achd\u00e9, was born on 30 July 1961 in Lyon, into a family repatriated from Morocco. Before devoting himself to comics he qualified in radiology and worked as a radiotherapy technician in Montpellier and N\u00eemes, leaving that career in 1985 to draw full time. He made his debut in 1988 with the self-published album <em>Destins Crois\u00e9s<\/em> and signed his first contract with Dargaud in 1991, creating series such as <em>C.R.S. = D\u00e9tresse<\/em> and <em>Woker<\/em>. In 2002, following the death of Morris, he was invited to take over the drawing of Lucky Luke, staying faithful to the original creator&#8217;s line, and published his first album, <em>Le Cuisinier fran\u00e7ais<\/em>, in 2003. He has since drawn several dozen new adventures in the series, translated into more than sixteen languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Andr\u00e9 F. Morgado<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andr\u00e9 F. Morgado is a writer, editor, teacher and translator, founder of the Bicho Carpinteiro imprint and co-founder of A Seita, with work recognised by Portuguese and international awards, including the Jabuti and the HQ Mix in Brazil. He is the author of <em>A Vida Oculta de Fernando Pessoa<\/em> (The Hidden Life of Fernando Pessoa), one of the great successes of contemporary Portuguese comics; <em>O Infeliz Pacto de George Walden<\/em> (The Unhappy Pact of George Walden), winner of the 2020 Vinheta Prize for Best Portuguese Script; and <em>A Aventura do Sapo \u2014 Caos e Coaxos<\/em> (2025, drawn by Kachisou). He has also written four titles in the Cl\u00e1ssicos da Literatura Portuguesa collection (Levoir\/RTP) and, in children&#8217;s literature, <em>O Triste Monstro da Caixa<\/em> and <em>Fernando Pessoa \u2013 O Menino que Sonhava<\/em>. Together with Joana Afonso, he contributed a story to the European anthology marking eighty years of Lucky Luke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Joana Afonso<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joana Afonso was born in 1989 and is one of the most acclaimed authors in Portuguese comics. She holds a degree in Painting and a doctorate in Drawing from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, where she has taught since 2013. She made her debut with the album <em>O Baile<\/em> (2012, written by Nuno Duarte), which won Best Album at Amadora BD in 2013, and went on to publish <em>Deixa-me Entrar<\/em> as sole author. She was part of The Lisbon Studio collective, produced the series <em>Living Will<\/em> and the album <em>Zahna<\/em>, and in 2021 won the award for Best Fanzine\/Self-Published Work with <em>O Besti\u00e1rio da Isa<\/em>, completed in 2022. More recently she has illustrated two albums in Levoir&#8217;s Cl\u00e1ssicos da Literatura Portuguesa collection, <em>A Mais Breve Hist\u00f3ria da R\u00fassia<\/em> and an album about Caxias prison, as well as drawing a Lucky Luke story with the writer Andr\u00e9 F.
